Which Type of Eyebrow Product is Right for Me?

Eyebrows.  You know, those clumps of hair that grow above our eyelids on our foreheads?  For some reason, women and men across the world have loved to tame, shape, manage, and style these things for ages now!  Whether you tweeze, shave, wax, or thread your brows into the perfect shape, get them microbladed to wake up every day with them looking just a yo want them to look, or are blessed with au naturale brows that are the perfect shape, thickness, and color for you, it can be really fun to play around with new brow products to test out different brow looks!  We wanted to share some insights on the different brow product types there are out there and what they can do for your brows!

  1. Brow Pencils

We all know her and many of us love her.  If you choose the perfect brow pencil for you (and trust us- there are a TON of different brow pencils out there), that can help you achieve so many different styles and looks!  You can use a brow pencil to line/define the perimeters or arches of your brows for a more defined look overall. If you feel you only need to fill in some areas of your brows where they may be thin or sparse, a brow pencil will make this super simple for you, being that they have the most precise application.  If you like a fluffed up brow, use a brow pencil to draw little hair strokes to fill in and define areas of your brows!

There are plenty of different kinds of brow pencils out there- thick-tipped, thin-tipped, angled, creamy, harder, twistable, and sharpenable!  Just a few recommendations from us include the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz or the Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow pencil for a twistable, insanely precise brow pencil, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer or the Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil for an angled tip to better help with shaping, defining boldly, and drawing hair strokes.

  1. Brow Gel

This tool is essential in many people with fuller natural brows routines, even if it is added in with other brow products!  Most brow gels come in a tube and have a “spoolie” applicator, which is essentially a mascara wand to comb through brow hairs and set them in place.  These can be found with tints to make brows bolder and fuller with color, or clear if you are using it more so to simply set your brows in place for the day alone, or with other products!  Many people who like a soft, natural brow like to use solely a brow gel, but a lot of people like to use this after defining their brows with another colored product, whether a pencil, crayon, pen, or pomade to set their natural hairs in place.

You can find brow gels like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel, with a rather large applicator that allows for quick and easy coverage of the brow and adds a nice tint to the hairs, or ones with a much smaller more precise spoolie applicator for more definition and color packing, like the Milk Makeup Kush Fiber Brow Gel (which, for example, comes in a clear shade!) or the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel.  Products like the Urban Decay Brow Finishing Gel are designed to be the final step in setting your brow hairs in place.

  1. Brow Pens/Crayons

There are of course many uniquely formulated brow products specifically designed for brow definition by drawing them on with something, and many times these come in a “pen” format, which usually is very similar to a pencil, just with more of a smooth, liquid eyeliner-like application and smoother, more defining pigmentation.  Brow crayons can be anything from a larger, creamier and therefore thicker pencil, to one product with different steps for your best brows.

The first brow pen type of product we would love to tell you about is the Urban Decay Brow Blade Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil & Ink Stain, which indeed looks like a liquid eyeliner, and allows for a very smooth, precise, ad pigmented application of filling in and defining or darkening the brows.  An affordable, creamy, crayon-esque pencil is the NYX Cosmetics Fll & Fluff Eyebrow Pomade Pencil. Another popular, large and creamy crayon for the brows is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Pencil. These can also be used as a highlight under/around the brows for better definition and to make them pop!  A product that incorporates the defining and highlighting properties all in one would be the Benefit Cosmetics Brow Contour Pro all in one pencil product.

  1. Brow Powders

Brow Powders are pretty straight forward.  They are pressed powders designed for the brows!  Many people claim that eyeshadows can work just as well, however most brow powders are specifically designed with the proper pigmentation for the brows, as well as wearability as a prime factor- so essentially they are less likely to smudge or smear than eyeshadows!  Many people love to use an angled brush to lightly fill in areas of their brows with some pigment and then set them with a gel, but many also love to use powders in a different way (including myself!). Most people prefer the look of brows that fade a bit in color towards the center so they don’t look blocky.  You can use a brow powder slightly lighter than your chosen defining color product and use the lighter powder shade on the inner portions of your eyebrow and bled them inwards either with hairlike strokes, or a solid blend.

There are infinite brow powders out there but some of our favorites are the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo or the Benefit Cosmetics Foolproof Brow Powder both with two shades to work with for definition purposes!

  1. Brow Pomades

The last type of brow product we wanted to chat about is brow pomade!  This type of product is for the makeup connoisseur or person who wants the utmost definition and boldness to their brows!  I have also found that these are the MOST longwearing and waterproof. However, this type of product is not the easiest or quickest brow product out there.  Most of the time, these come in a little pot and are a thick, creamy consistency. When used with an angled brush, they can fill in brows boldly and entirely, as well as with hair strokes for a bold, feathered look to your brow.  Sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good hand for this type of product but the results can be the most satisfying! ANother benefit of brow pomades is the way they hold natural hairs in place.

Of course we have recommendations for this type of brow product!  My personal favorite is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade.  This stuff is creamy, easy to use, and extremely waterproof. (I mean it!  I’ve went through an entire day, swimming UNDERWATER at a pool party, and sleeping in my brows only and they still look amazing, as much as we don’t recommend sleeping in them!)  Some other incredible products like this are the Benefit Cosmetics ka-BROW! Cream Gel Eyebrow Color (which comes with a convenient brush!) and the Makeup Revolution Brow Pomade.

There are infinite choices of products and techniques you can use on your brows and you may even fall in love with the thrill of testing these different product types and techniques out!  All of these products can be found at very large price ranges from a few dollars, to more high end, and we recommend trying and combining a bunch of them! Happy Brow Glamming!
